How it works

Daily generation is roughly energy (kWh) = systemSize (kW) × peakSunHours × performanceRatio, where the performance ratio (typically about 0.75–0.85) accounts for inverter losses, heat, wiring, and dirt. Peak sun hours are the equivalent hours of full-strength sunlight your location gets on an average day. Working backwards from your daily consumption gives the system size to aim for.

Example 1: A 5 kW system with 4 peak sun hours and a 0.8 performance ratio produces about 16 kWh/day, or roughly 5,800 kWh a year.
Example 2: A home using 20 kWh/day in an area with 4.5 sun hours needs about 20 ÷ (4.5 × 0.8) ≈ 5.6 kW of panels to cover its usage.
